Review: A Discovery of Witches

I have mixed feelings about this book. There were some good points and some bad points. The love story going on is frustrating; one minute they are all over each other and the next they aren’t. For about the first half of the book I was pretty bored, and this is a pretty meaty book. It was interesting with the demons and vampires and witches, also with the slight element of the threat of danger. But then there is crying and some not so validated feelings with somewhat of a relief, but not enough…and the characters are kind of boring and lack personality. They are all scholarly types without many interesting qualities.

I can say that the second half of the book is much better. There is some real action and real danger. Magic comes into play and the characters start to really come to life finally. Since this is a series I am probably going to at least check out the second book to see if the good story that is started at the end of this book gets better.

So, would I recommend this book? I’m not sure. It is’t awful, but it is a very long book and if you are one that gives up on books easily I would say pick up at your own risk. If you can hang in there, give it a chance.
